Developmental milestones are a set of functional skills or age-specific tasks that most children can do at a certain age range. As a student moves through elementary school, academic struggles related to missed milestones become more readily apparent due to the amount of time they spend in a classroom environment. For instance, studies have found that kindergarten reading abilities can predict reading achievement through the fourth and sixth grades. In addition, the following developmental milestones in school-aged children typically occur between the ages of six and ten and can help predict whether students are academically successful:
- Understands opposites: big/little, hard/soft, heavy/light, etc.
- Masters consonants f, v
- Can tell a complicated story
- Reading may be a major interest
- Is able to write simple compositions
- Create a number sentence or equation from a word problem
- Follows fairly complex directions with little repetition
- Has well-developed concepts of time and numbers
