Medication-Free Approach For Kids & Young Adults Diagnosed With Asperger Syndrome

What is Asperger Syndrome?

Asperger's syndrome, often simply referred to as Asperger's, is a condition that was historically used to describe individuals on the autism spectrum who exhibit high-functioning autism characteristics, including average or above-average intelligence and more developed language skills compared to others on the autism spectrum. However, Asperger's syndrome is no longer a separate diagnosis in the most recent diagnostic criteria and is now included under the broader category of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Key Characteristics of Asperger's Syndrome include:

  1. Social Challenges:
    • Difficulty in social interactions and understanding social cues.
    • Limited ability to form and maintain friendships.
    • Challenges in interpreting nonverbal communication (e.g., facial expressions, body language).
  2. Repetitive Behaviors and Routines:
    • Engaging in repetitive movements or speech patterns.
    • A strong preference for routines and difficulty with changes.
    • Intense focus on specific interests or hobbies.
  3. Communication Differences:
    • Formal or pedantic speech.
    • Difficulty understanding sarcasm, jokes, or metaphors.
    • Literal interpretation of language.
  4. Sensory Sensitivities:
    • Hypersensitivity or hyposensitivity to sensory inputs like sounds, lights, textures, or smells.
  5. Cognitive Traits:
    • Strong memory skills, especially for facts and details.
    • Excellent pattern recognition and logical thinking.

Excellent pattern recognition and logical thinking. Asperger's syndrome, now considered part of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), encompasses a range of challenges and strengths. Understanding these can lead to more effective support and interventions, helping individuals lead fulfilling and productive lives. The emphasis on personalized approaches highlights the importance of recognizing each individual's unique profile and needs.

Child Asperger Syndrome and The Brain Balance Program

Asperger syndrome (now considered a part of ASD) is a pervasive developmental disorder on the autism spectrum that is often described as high-functioning autism.* Children with Asperger syndrome can display difficulty with social interactions, exhibit a restricted range of interests and repetitive behaviors, and struggle with underdeveloped motor skills, but tend to have average to above-average IQs and well-developed vocabularies. According to the Autism Society, one of the major differences between Asperger syndrome and other autism spectrum disorders is there is no speech delay in Asperger’s, however, these children may struggle with reading social cues, and not understand subtleties, such as irony, sarcasm or humor.

The Brain Balance Program offers a drug-free, integrated approach to treating Asperger syndrome that helps children lead a more successful academic and personal life. Our program can help children with high-functioning autism and Asperger syndrome effectively work on improving developmental functions based on the areas where we find the greatest need. When it comes to treating Asperger syndrome, Brain Balance focuses on combining individualized sensory-motor and academic activities that address whole-brain connectivity and associated behavioral issues. Take some time to read through our stories to see first-hand what parents have to say about their child’s experience in our program.

*It is important to speak directly with your Doctor concerning the presence or confirmation of any diagnosis of a spectrum disorder.
